Syrian army says loses control of central city of Hama amid rebel offensive

The Syrian army on Thursday said it has lost control of the key central city of Hama and withdrawn its forces after rebels had broken through its defences. The rebels, who are led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), began their flash advance a week ago, and quickly seized swathes of territory, including Syria’s second city Aleppo.
